Lilacs for next year

June 2, 2011

I FINALLY got my lilac bushes pruned! I have neglected the poor things for the past 2 years – hence the fact that I got almost no lilacs this spring (which makes me quite sad). I seemed to have forgotten that lilacs need to be pruned every year in order to actually make flowers the following spring.
BeforeAfterAs you can see, there is quite a difference in the before and after of the bush.  This one shown is my one white lilac bush. It seems that whoever owned the house before us decided a good idea would be to put a large chunk of brick border in the middle of the planter ring it’s in, therefore half of the new shoots were growing about a foot outside of the ring.
I also have 3 purples (2 are planted next to each other so as to look like one bush). I’m thinking about propagating another bush out of the white one to put in my front yard. But I haven’t quite decided yet. If I can manage to get rid of the juniper that’s in the corner of my yard I think I may put the new one there. But that will have to wait until next year, probably.

For now I’m just happy to have gotten the existing bushes under control, and am very much looking forward to having lilacs next year!
