What Does It Feel Like?

July 24, 2011

This post was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend on the way to a race last night.

During this time that I’ve been pregnant I’ve been told on a number of occasions that people, mostly guys, can’t imagine what it feels like to have a baby inside of you. I’m going to explain this feeling for anyone who hasn’t/ can’t experience it for themselves.

The first part is for all those little wiggles and squirms early on – like the beginning of the second trimester.
Find a hamster. Cup it between your hands and feel it squirming around and moving in there. Pretty cool, right? Yeah. That’s a little bit of what it feels like… except inside your belly.

The next part would be the late-term kicks, rolls, and other not quite so comfortable movements. [Please do NOT actually do this part. Just imagine it, okay?]

Step one. Find a cat. Preferably a declawed one. For calm babies you might try a fluffy Persian, for really active ones you might try a stray tomcat.
Step two. Get a pillowcase. [All you moms out there know where I’m going with this] Put the cat into said pillow case and snuggle gently.

There you have it! Now you know just what it feels like to have a baby in your belly. Of course that’s just the actual movement part, not any of the other parts of being pregnant, but I thought it would be a good thought to put out there just the same.
