A New Career Path

May 13, 2012

My next investment.

This past week I have finally decided on the next camera that I’m going to get. I’ve chosen the Canon EOS T2i. It’s not the fanciest camera – not even the top one in the Canon consumer line, but I think it’s the best fit for me.  I am not expecting it to magically make me a better photographer, I know better than that. However, it will be so nice to have a camera that won’t hold me back from getting the shots that I want. They have excellent image quality, great adaptability and a whole host of lenses available for it. I’m looking forward to being able to just *focus* on what I’m doing and not having to worry about if the camera is going to do what I need it to or not.

As you may or may not know, it has been my intention for a very long time to *develop*  a career in photography. I’ve always been good at taking pictures, or so I’ve been told and is my opinion of myself most of the time. I have decided that it is time. For far too long I have put off more elaborate shooting trips and events because of other things drawing on my time. This is the year that I begin my journey – and find out if I really make the grade.

I’ve been composing a plan of attack these past couple of weeks, starting on the night that I finally decided on the T2i and that I am going to get it the next chance we can afford. So far I have come up with my short term plan to help me start to reach my long term goals.

  • I will be spending as much time as possible this summer (vague, I know) taking pictures.
  • I will be attending as many community events as possible and sending pictures in to the local newspaper.
  • If my pictures are well received by the editor at the paper I will be seeing about getting a position as a second photographer or a free-lance position.
  • I will be taking at least two day-trips for photo shoots.
  • I will have my revised portfolio put together by the end of summer.
  • I want to get PhotoImpression Gold this year, or perhaps PhotoStudio 6?  I currently use an old version of PhotoImpression and really like what it does..

I still have some decisions to make about my future. I have to decide what area I truly want to focus on – motorsports, nature, photojournalism, etc. I know that I don’t want to do portraits or weddings on a full-time basis. I’m not entirely too keen on working directly for people. I prefer to have more creative control over my work. Also, when I’m doing a wedding I tend to feel like someone’s always watching over what I’m doing.
I would really like to be able to work in motorsports – dirt bikes, street bikes, cars – I think that’s my favorite thing to do. I know that it will take a lot more time and effort to break into the category, but I think that’s where I’ll be the happiest and where I feel I can do the best work.
I still need to really decide, though.

If you happen know anyone in the industry and you want to do any name-dropping… feel free to drop mine! 🙂

The T2i is a great camera! A lot of us work with it for both video and photography, good choice!

Thanks! It really is a wonderful camera! I’m SO happy that I got to buy it a lot earlier than I was expecting to. I’m already seeing the results of having an adaptable camera that doesn’t hold me back from getting the shots that I envision.

And what do You have to say about all this?
